Get to know the Aquarium Research Foundation Team, and discover the Motivations of each Individual

Do we really want to live with the prospect of fish museums or in the knowledge that an enormous loss of species is imminent in all aquatic ecosystems without doing anything about it? The answer of the founding members of our foundation – the Aquarium Research Foundation e.V. – is very clear: NO! Instead, we would like to promote research and science in an area that is still too little in focus: research in aquariums. We would like to contribute to promoting a worldwide development that uses the enormous potential of aquariums as a place of research, and leads to the establishment of the new scientific discipline aquariology (Aquarium Science), and ultimately, ideally, prevents the progression of biodiversity loss in seas, rivers and lakes. The protection of aquatic habitats is ultimately also climate protection, and concerns us all, because we will all be affected.

“My most formative impressions regarding the beauty of the underwater world were date from my first visits to the Berlin Zoo-Aquarium as a child. The adventures of the marine biologist Jaques-Yves Cousteau reinforced the desire to discover the secrets of this hidden world. And so a passion became a profession, which is also expressed in the establishment of a foundation that is dedicated to explore the underwater world but in the well-defined space (of the aquarium). And getting to the bottom of open questions in an aquarium is not only easier, but also more efficient. I also believe that those who have specific knowledge or are able to acquire it also have the responsibility passing it on to other people for the benefit of all.“
